Are You Moving to Napa – Did You Know?
According to Napa historian Kami Santiago, Napa was the name given to a southern Nappan village whose people shared the area with elk, deer, grizzlies and cougars for many centuries. In 1823, the majority of the inhabitants consisted of Native American Indians, yet the Spanish priests were able to convert some natives; the rest being attacked and dispersed by Spanish soldiers. The American farmers set up there in the 1830s. The following tensions between whites and Indians broke into war in 1850, with one white man’s death resulting in the killing of all the Indians whites could find. This drove remaining Indians toth toward Clear Lake to the north. The Native American population consisted of only a few laborers and servants working for whites by 1870.
Napa is the county seat of Napa County, and the principal city of the Napa county Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its total population of 76,915 by 2010 made it the 100th largest city in California. Incorporated as a city in 1872, the region got a boost from the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 that had featured a Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon as topping several famous French labels in a blind tasting format. This particular tasting solidified the region’s reputation as a producer of world class wines, and by the end of the nineteenth century there were more than one hundred and forty wineries in the area. Some of the originals still in existence are Beaulieu, Beringer, Charles Krug, Chateau Montelena, Far Niente, Mayacamas, Markham Vineyards, and Schramsberg Vineyards. It is the unique Mediterranean climate, geography and geology of the region that are conducive to growing quality wine grapes.
Of the total area of 18.1 square miles , 17.8 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water. The Napa River runs through the city on a path to the San Pablo Bay. There have been several waterfront development projects along the banks of the river including fill operations governed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers regulations. The 1990s marked the Napa River Flood Project that has a goal of mitigating the risk of flooding along a 6-mile part of the River and 1-mile of the Napa Creek. The valley is flanked by the Mayacamas Mountain Range on the western and northern sides and the Vaca Mountains on the eastern side, with several smaller valleys existing within these two ranges. The valley floor rises from sea level at the southern end to 362 feet above sea level at the northern end in Calistoga, at the foot of Mount Saint Helena. The Oakville and Rutherford American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) fall in a geographical area known as the Rutherford Bench in the center of the valley floor, with soil in the southern end of the valley consisting mainly of sediments deposited by earlier advances and retreats of San Pablo Bay. The soil at the northern end of the valley has a large volume of volcanic lava and ash. Several of the little hills that emerge from the middle of the valley floor near Yountville are proof the region’s volcanic past.
Quality of Life
Napa Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Napa County, and it is considered one of the premier wine regions in the world. Commercial wine production in the region dates back to the nineteenth century, yet premium wine production dates back only to the 1960s. With breathtaking views abounding at every turn, Napa is a world travel destination. Mustard in the late winter, the picturesque rolling hills planted with vineyards year-round, and many levels of wineries litter the landscape. One can dine at world class restaurants like the French Laundry, or spoil oneself with a mud bath in Calistoga, or simply stay at a quaint bed & breakfast in the area. On the southern end of the Napa valley, Napa is a jumping-off point for wine country excursions, and the town has undergone a renaissance to become a world-class destination in its own right.
