Are You Moving to Menlo Park – Did You Know?
Novato, California is located on the western side of the state in the San Francisco Bay area. This beautiful region has plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and tours, as well as shopping, museums and wineries.
The government of Mexico gave permit to the land to Fernando Feliz back in 1839. This was previously the site of Coast Miwok villages, and was named Rancho Novato after the Miwok leader.
In 1856 Novato opened its very first post office, and built their first school in 1859. The railroad came through in 1879, and in 1896 the town built a Presbyterian church. The church still stands in the town as a landmark to this day.
The beautiful climate in Novato and the peaceful surroundings are probably major reasons that more than 50,000 people have made it their home. The town has plenty of schools, both private and public, and several notable museums, along with activities for families, couples, or the single visitor.
The Hamilton Field History Museum is the perfect place to learn the history of the area. Hamilton Field played a very important role in WWII, and here you can see hand-made models, remnants of airplanes, authentic uniforms, and hear plenty of wonderful stories.
Another great museum for kids and adults alike is the Space Station Museum. See genuine space rocks, control modules, a lunar landing module and lunar car, a space suit, and plenty of other artifacts. Kids get a kick out of the cosmonaut diaper! These are all up close and personal, not far away and behind glass like at most museums. Plenty of hands on exhibits are throughout the museum, and the best part of all? This museum is FREE! Donations are happily accepted.
Take a stroll through Old Town Novato. Shops, eateries and other businesses are scattered around town, and will definitely remind you of the good old days. Some of the original buildings from the 1920s and 1930s are still standing.
If you enjoy wine, head to the Trek Winery. The owners have been producing their own wines here for 20 years, and won several awards. Stop in for a taste, or maybe bring some home with you. They also have a nice selection of olive oils.
The Novato Farmers Market is a great place to get all your fresh produce from. It is all grown and picked locally so you can taste the best of the area.
Novato is surrounded with plenty of hiking areas, picnic spots, swimming places and dog friendly areas as well.
If you come to Novato with children, you don’t want to miss a visit to the Adventure Playground. It is about a half hour’s drive away, but well worth the trip. It has been rated as one of the top five play places in the country. For 36 years, they have been entertaining children with adventures they won’t find at your normal playground. Here, not only can they climb on forts that were designed and built by kids just like them, but also build their own structures. Sawing, hammering and painting are completely encouraged here and of course supervised. Zip lines are also available for super fun.
There are dozens of other attractions and sights around the area for plenty of non-stop excitement. Check out Novato on your next visit to California.
