Are You Moving to Petaluma – Did You Know?
Petaluma, California is a beautiful city in western California that is home to almost 60,000 residents. It is full of plenty of history, spectacular Victorian style houses, and was once called the egg capital of the world, due to the fact that the egg incubator was invented here.
Petaluma was once home to the Coast Miwok Native Americans. The Rancho Petaluma Adobe was built in 1836 for the Vallejo family to use as a summer home. This building is now a National Historic Landmark, and is said to be one of the best preserved buildings in the area from that time period.
The area became popular to travelers from the east during the gold rush in 1849, and the town even had brothels along the boulevard.
The Mediterranean climate brings plenty of visitors to the area, and there is plenty to see once you arrive. Petaluma has plenty of breathtaking parks for hiking and outdoor activities, and has been the location of many films. Stephen King’s thriller “Cujo” was filmed in part here in 1983, as well as “Scream” and “Phenomenon.”
Ranches and Dairies are very big in the area, and there are several to visit. McEvoy Ranch is the perfect excursion for those who are tired of wine tours, or just want something different. The owners will guide tours through the olive oil making process, and allow you to purchase some fantastic products.
Tara Firma Farms is an awesome organic farm that uses no antibiotics. They grass feed their animals, and allows you to take a tour around the grounds. Bring the little ones and they may be able to hold baby chicks! Another awesome educational and hands on visit with or without kids is McClelland’s Dairy. See how natural farming is done, enjoy the cows grazing the pasture and try your hand at milking a cow. Don’t forget to purchase some of the products and you will notice the difference natural farming makes.
Garden Valley Ranch is the perfect place to stop and smell the roses. Literally. There are over 10,000 rose bushes growing over 60 different varieties of roses for you to wander through. It is a peaceful, relaxing visit you won’t want to miss.
If you want more thrilling outdoor adventures, check out one of several parks in the area. Biking, hiking, bird watching and trail running are just a few of the activities offered.
If you are a Star Wars Fan, you won’t want to miss the Rancho Obi-Wan museum. Imagine stepping into the largest collection of Star Wars stuff you can dream up. So big, they have made it into the Guinness Book of Records.
There are plenty of wine tasting tours and breweries around town if you want to taste some of the local spirits. Green String Farm is the perfect spot to find plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats, and other delicious items.
For some interesting nightlife, head over to the Cinnabar Theater for comedy, drama, satire, music or concerts. McNear’s Mystic Theater is another great option for some live music.
If you just want to relax and see the town, stroll around and visit antique shops, dine at a waterfront eatery, or check out a local art gallery. Whatever your plans are, you want to make sure they include a stop in Petaluma.
