Are You Moving to Sebastopol – Did You Know?
On the western coast of California, nestled between the city of Santa Rosa and Bodega Bay, you will find the charming city of Sebastopol. Apples and plums were major crops of the city in the past, but today those orchards are mostly all wine vineyards.
The first inhabitants of the area were from the Coast Miwok tribe and the Pomo peoples. During the gold rush in the 1850s, many more travelers made their way to the area. Arrowheads can still be found in gopher holes and other areas where the town’s progress has not disturbed the soil.
The area is not too crowded, less than 7,500 residents call it their home. There are plenty of vineyards scattered throughout the city, and the scenery is beautiful all around. The old railroad tracks have been paved over to make an awesome biking and hiking trail that stretches on for about eight and a half miles. The Joe Rodota trail, as it is called, is perfect for getting some exercise and enjoying the outdoors.
Local artistry can be viewed at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. It consists of a gallery, concert hall, and an annual movie festival. The Main Stage West also has live shows and concerts, and the acting has been giving rave reviews by many a visitor.
If you prefer a more unique take on art, check out Florence Avenue. Here you will see some whimsical, colorful sculptures, and see things like mail boxes, pots and pans, vacuum cleaners and other things made into beautiful art. This is a great place to bring the kids as they get a real kick out of the sculptures.
Luther Burbank’s experiment farm is a learning experience that is quite interesting. See things like white raspberry bushes, thorn-less berry bushes, and even a thorn-less cactus. Rope making, jam making and other things are also crafted here. You can take a guided tour, or just stroll around and discover on your own.
There are dozens of wineries, breweries, and taverns around town to quench your thirst. Take a tour through a vineyard or brewery to see how your favorite drink is produced. Or just head to one of the local taverns for a relaxing break.
Sebastopol is located just a 20-minute drive from the Pacific Ocean. Take a drive and cruise the Pacific coast highway, or PCH as it is called, where you will see magnificent views of the ocean. Check out the panoramic sights from Arched Rock Beach in Bodega Bay. Crashing waves, light breezes and the sound of gulls make this a picturesque stop. There are beaches along the drive, but you may never want to stop when you see the beauty of the highway. It is a definite get away from the city traffic.
Sebastopol is a quaint city with charm and history that you may miss if you only head to the popular busy cities. Take a chance by stepping off the beaten path and view the beauty that is Sebastopol.
